Make your fireplace safe

In the last Issue of Benefits Advisor, Farm Bureau Insurance presented several tips on how to heat your home safely with wood-burning stoves. Well, this is also the time of year when thousands of Michigan homeowners are using their fireplaces, too.
If you use a fireplace in your home, remember these safety tips:
- Clean your chimney regularly, and inspect it for obstructions and cracks that might cause chimney and roof fires.
- Make sure the damper is open before you start any fire.
- Never burn trash, paper or green wood. They cause heavy creosote buildup and are difficult to control.
- Use a screen heavy enough to stop rolling logs and big enough to cover the entire opening of your fireplace.
- Don\'t wear loose-fitting clothes near any open flame.
- Store cooled ashes in a tightly sealed metal container outside your house.
- One more thing: contact your Farm Bureau Insurance agent to make sure your home insurance is properly updated.
