Message from the President
Greetings from Tolfree Farms!
We hope this finds you all well and into preparation for winter! As we know, this beautiful weather can turn suddenly cold and wet!
We are especially fortunate this year as second crop clover, oats and straw are in the barn. The calves are weaned after loud and lengthy objections on the part of them and their mothers-and the bulls are going into their private quarters for the winter. The garden, planted late in June is now sending forth its bounty. Today we are canning, beans and freezing corn while tomatoes in the garden await their turn. An abundance of cucumbers has left us well pickled.
Fall is harvest time for Farm Bureau also-we have just concluded our annual membership drive and MADE OUR QUOTA for new regular members! Special thanks to Judy Szyszkoski, Carol Saari and Evey Palosaari for combing the plat books. Five red, white and blue stars go to Evey who signed up five regular members in one day!! Brandy Mulari stayed late to process the applications so we could get them in on time. Stars to her too!
Planning for the annual meeting scheduled for Tuesday, September 27 at the Keweenaw Bay firehall is complete. We look forward to a scrumptious pot luck dinner and short business meeting. Stan promises to have all new jokes too!.
This past spring, we attended the Farm Bureau Legislative Seminar in Lansing. (As and aside, we drove 600 miles south to get caught in a major blizzard!) Like all Farm Bureau functions, it was well organized and worthwhile. Governor Snyder spoke at the luncheon. He supports most of our agenda.
Copper Country had a strong contingent staffing the Miracle of Life tent at the UP Fair again this year. There were even live births during Fair hours! Infant lambs, calves and pigs were young enough for fairgoers to appreciate the miracle of live births.
There was a Farm Bureau steak fry for Gov. Snyder at Dennis and Diane Hanson's farm in Cornell, MI. Diane is a member of the MI Agricultural Commission. I'm told that the Hanson's beef cattle "mooed" their appreciation at appropriate moments during the Gov's remarks. Attending from Copper Country were Sally Narhi, Gary Palosaari, John and Pat Talsma, Brenda Turunen, and Judy Szyszkoski.
As we start the new Farm Bureau year, I ask you all to tout the virtues of agriculture and Farm Bureau. We can accommodate many more members!
Jim Countryman, Pres
Copper Country Board
