Local Farmers lobby state lawmakers
Paul & Priscilla Bleisner, Jan Denter, DJ Frostic, Rodney & Harriett Romain, Roger & Joanmarie Weiss; Ron Weisenberger and Jeramie Ziola represented the Saginaw County Farm Bureau at this year's Lansing Legislative Seminar. The Saginaw group was among more than 300 Michigan Farm Bureau Members from across the state to converge on Lansing Feb. 18 to counsel lawmakers on current agricultural issues.
MFB's annual Lansing Legislative Seminar offers producers the opportunity to meet face-to-face with state senators, representatives and staffers, putting the grass roots of the state's second-largest industry in direct contact with lawmakers.
Alongside their peers, these local farmers discussed current agriculture-related issues, including animal welfare, road funding, budget concerns and proposed fees at the Michigan Department of Agriculture, and an update on the status of legislation that would codify the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) in state statute.
Four instructional sessions in the afternoon brought participants up to speed on those key issues before they met with elected officials at the late afternoon reception, when scores of lawmakers and their staffers met with constituent Farm Bureau members from their districts.
The Lansing Legislative Seminar was attended by several of our members. Given a chance to meet with state legislators to discuss pressing issues involving our county and the state.
