Farm Bureau's grassroots policy development process gives members the opportunity to participate and voice their concerns regarding issues pertinent to the agricultural industry. With the climate and energy discussion, many facets of agriculture and MFB policies are impacted.
As the policy development process unfolds at the local level this summer, be sure to research the advancements made in the climate and energy discussion. National level discussions about agriculture typically focus on the ability to trade or sell carbon sequestration credits and the increase costs of inputs for farmers. To the right you will see several articles and links to other web sites that focus on these two impacts to agriculture.
- What incentives or exceptions should the government offer food producers to compensate for the higher production costs due to charging for emissions?
- How should any revenue from a cap and trade program be distributed?
- Should the use of these funds be limited to "green collar" job training, alternative energy development, energy efficiency and other efforts related to addressing climate change, or can funds be used to support other government programs such as education and health care?
- Should tariffs be used to increase the cost of imported products to reflect the costs of emissions reductions in the US?
