#39 SOYBEAN 2010

There are about 2 million acres of soybeans grown in Michigan. The state average yield in 2006 was 45 bushels per acre. With today's soybean prices, this means soybeans will add over $500 million in farmgate value, which increases to $1 billion when input suppliers are taken into account.

Over the years, soybean yields have not kept pace with yield advances of other competing crops. Through Project GREEEN funding and support from the Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee, Michigan State University Extension (MSUE) established the Soybean 2010 initiative to improve soybean profitability through greater communication between producers, university representatives, processors and end users.

We support Soybean 2010 and encourage soybean growers to actively participate in this program. We support communication to growers of existing and new research data and MSUE's efforts to address producer identified new research needs.
