#1 APPRECIATION
During the 94th legislative session, more than 3,100 bills were introduced, with more than 500 bills signed into law by the Governor. Issues of importance to agriculture considered during the second year include:
• Creation of comprehensive energy legislation including a renewable portfolio standard and net metering.
• Creation of water use legislation and ratification of the Great Lakes Compact.
• Amendments to the Manufactured Milk Law and Grade A Milk Law.
• Technical amendments to the Farm Produce Insurance Act.
• Amendments to Michigan Vehicle Code to allow for log trucks to utilize crib-style hauling.
• Clarification of general trespassing situations on farm property.
The State’s continued economic challenges have forced more cuts in agricultural funding and threatened elimination of fundamental agricultural programs for plant and animal health, consumer protection, environmental stewardship, and statistical analysis. Michigan Farm Bureau remains concerned about the future existence of critical programs that support the $63.7 billion agriculture and food industry in Michigan.
We appreciate the interest and support of the “Friends of Agriculture” during these challenging times.
