Farm Bureau honors Millington member for service, dedication
Tuscola County farmer Delores Damm has been recognized by Michigan Farm Bureau (MFB) as the organization's Volunteer of the Month for January 2006. Having retired from dairying, Damm and her husband Martin now operate a cash crop operation near Millington.
Although she hasn't been a Farm Bureau member for long, Damm jumped right into one of the organization's most pressing issues: land use. With a committee of volunteers, she helped design a land use brochure for the county Farm Bureau and organized a bus tour last fall by which local and county government officials were able to get a first-hand overview of the problem of sprawl and its affects on agricultural land in Tuscola County.
"Delores has only been a member for a short time, but she immediately took on a leadership role in a struggling committee," wrote her nominator for the Volunteer of the Month honor. "She has taken a hold on that committee and grown it into something very productive and innovative."
For her efforts in organizing the county land use committee, Damm was honored at the Tuscola County Farm Bureau's 2005 Annual Meeting.
"The land use committee has regular meetings, and is the strongest committee in the county at this time," her nominator wrote. "Delores has worked very hard with her committee and has earned high respect from the local commissioners, the county road commission, soil conservation office, and other local and county officials."
In addition to her work with the land use committee, Damm assists with the county Farm Bureau's legislative events and promotion and education activities. She has also represented the her Farm Bureau at local government meetings and at MFB's 2005 State Annual Meeting in Grand Rapids.
