Duane Scheuerlein

Farm Bureau honors Bay County member for promoting agriculture

Duane Scheuerlein

Bay County farmer Duane Scheuerlein has been named Michigan Farm Bureau's (MFB) Volunteer of the Month for February 2012 for his promotion of agriculture in the Bay Area.

Scheuerlein jumped at the opportunity to motivate the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce to produce a video promoting local agriculture. The video, "Maximum Yield: The Impact of Agribusiness in the Bay Area", is available on the Chamber's website (http://www.baycityarea.com); will be distributed throughout the community; and is being broadcast on the local PBS channel. Scheuerlein's motivation and perseverance throughout the project is the key reason the video was completed.

The video was also used as a highlight for the recent Bay Area On the Go Luncheon featuring Gov. Rick Snyder, MFB President Wayne H. Wood, and Jim Byrum, president of the Michigan Agri-Business Association.

"Duane was highly instrumental in motivating and accomplishing the work with the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce," wrote his nominator for Volunteer of the Month. "Without his dedication the video may not have materialized and been such a success."

Scheuerlein's involvement in the video production is typical of his passion for and commitment to agriculture. As the past president of Bay County Farm Bureau and the current chair of the county issues committee, he has been very involved with local issues, including drainage, wind energy, land use and the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP). Scheuerlein is also active on the candidate evaluation and policy development committees in Bay County, and has lobbied state legislators by participating in MFB's annual Lansing Legislative Seminar. He has also been active in the Bay County Farm Bureau membership drives and served as a delegate at the MFB State Annual Meeting.

Scheuerlein and his family operate a cash crop farm near Freeland, raising 750 acres of dry beans, sugar beets, wheat, corn and soybeans. He and his wife Terri have three children.
