Robert Vorce has been named the recipient of the 2020 Emmet County Farm Bureau Scholarship. The 2020 graduate of Harbor Springs High School looks forward to continuing his education at the Industrial Arts Institute in Onaway, where he’ll pursue a welding certification.
Vorce grew up on 10-acre retired farm in Friendship Township north of Harbor Springs, in close contact with local agriculture.
“It was a working farm about 50 years ago, then was split into 10-acre plots,” he said. “We raise chickens for eggs and have a vegetable garden. I help my mom with the garden and farmers market.”
He also helps an uncle get in his hay crop, and has some experience raising pigs.
Vorce’s interest in welding goes back to his first exposure to it in eighth grade.
“I’ve wanted to be a welder ever since,” he said, and toward that end augmented his exposure through Boy Scouts, a senior-year welding class and preliminary training at Industrial Arts Institute.
“I’m enrolled at IAI this August,” he said. “Upon graduating, I look forward to a job in welding wherever there’s a need in the area — maybe even in agriculture.”
The Emmet County Farm Bureau Board of Directors congratulates Robert on his success to date and wishes him well in putting his welding talents to work.
