The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) will conduct a public meeting Tuesday, Aug.13, to gather comments about a proposed Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) in Winn, a small community located south of Mt. Pleasant in Isabella County. The proposed farm would be operated by Jon Peacock and would house 4,800 hogs. The proposal has generated newspaper editorials from local groups opposed to CAFOs in general, ostensibly for environmental reasons. However, the Michigan Farm Bureau maintains these concerns are overstated given the state’s stringent environmental enforcement of large agricultural enterprises.
