Supervised Agricultural Experience
My Agriscience SAE officially began in the 2017-2018 school year, when I took the Genetics and Ag Research course in our agriscience program. My research project allowed me to work with a local farmer to conduct research on "The Effects of Brixx on Insect Pressure and Sugar Content in Corn."
In my research, I looked for Western Bean Cutworm Eggs and checked the Brix level of corn. I recorded all of my data and compared two treatments to see which was most effective. Since I don't own the corn acres, this project allowed me to partner with Hasenick Brothers Farm in Springport, Mich., to advance my research skills and gain experience.
My research project sparked an interest that led me to my current job. I work at Michigan Ag Research in Albion, Mich., where I plant, collect data, harvest and conduct research on crops. Michigan Ag Research is a part of Pacific Ag in California and Florida Ag in Florida.
The company I work for conducts research for companies like Bayer, Monsanto and Food Machinery Corporation (FMC). I help grow vegetables and row crops all summer. In the warmer months, I work outside on field trials.
Now that the colder months are upon us, I work in the greenhouse and lab. My last SAE is my fair project. I show pigs at the Calhoun County Fair. I buy my pigs from Cockcroft Farms in April, and I sell them at the fair inAugust.
To obtain a position that utilizes my work ethic and passion for agriculture.
I have taken ag finance, genetics and ag research, mech-tech, bio-zoology and bio-botany.
I am currently the chapter secretary, and I have served on the strengthening agriculture, growing leaders and building communities committees.
I competed at the 2018 National Convention in the agriscience fair. I competed and won at the State Arthur Berkey Science Fair in March 2018. I have competed in the Crop Identification and Land Conservation at the Agricultural Skills Contests in the spring.
Every year, my chapter processes chicken that we raise for the broiler contest. From there, we convert them into chicken casseroles for our local food pantry. I participate in this community service event every year. During my freshman and sophomore years, my chapter hosted a community clean-up called Spartan Sparkle. In this event, we take about half of a school day to clean up our town and school grounds.
School and Extracurricular Involvement
I am the secretary of the Springport FFA Chapter, NHS member, Eaton Rapids CASL team and on the varsity soccer team at my school.
Awards and Honors
I have made the honor roll every semester of high school. During my freshman and sophomore years, our high school soccer team earned academic all-state.
