Access to affordable health care is one of the greatest benefits of Farm Bureau members. And like so many of your organization’s brilliant ideas, it started with farmer members identifying a need and using the strength of their unity to find a solution.
Farmers’ longtime struggle to access quality health insurance came to a head in early 1941, when members in Mason and Branch counties suggested Farm Bureau solve their health-care puzzle. Michigan Farm Bureau reached out to the Michigan Hospital Service — soon to become Blue Cross — to provide a group hospital plan for its membership.
In the program’s early days, members paid their health premiums to their Community Group secretaries. They called it “cold cash” because they often stashed the funds in the freezer until they could be deposited. Early quarterly premiums for a family of three or more was $5.25 if a bed in a hospital ward was sufficient — $6.24 for a private room.
Premiums have increased somewhat over the past 80 years, but so have the coverage options. Farm Bureau still provides its members with access to quality health insurance plans. Our longtime exclusive arrangement with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan now extends to several other carriers including Priority Health, Aetna, GeoBlue, LifeSecure and others.
