Planning a new irrigation or farm well? There are some important things to keep in mind and to make sure your well driller completes, to protect your ability to use your well.
These requirements may slow down the process of getting your farm well installed, but they are required by state law and county ordinances. Missing these steps can mean violation notices from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (MDEGLE) or the county health department, or even a restriction from using your well until all steps are completed, which will have higher fees if completed after-the-fact.
Most well drillers will complete these requirements for you, but if they are not done, any violations are the landowner’s responsibility, not the well driller. To protect your water uses, talk with your well driller and make sure all registrations and permits are completed. A list of licensed well drillers is available here.
