LANSING — Hop Growers of Michigan recently awarded the first “Chinook Cup” at their First Quarter General Assembly at Lansing Brewing Company. Modeled after the national Cascade Cup, the award goes to the hop grower with the best Chinook hop judged on aroma, appearance and analytical test results.
The competition was judged by a panel of expert craft brewers through a series of blind sensor tests. The Chinook hop variety is a dual-purpose hop used for both bittering and aroma. MI Local Hops from Williamsburg won first place.
The competition also featured a wildcard division for hop growers that don’t grow Chinook. Two local Monroe hop growers did well in that competition.
Mr. Wizard’s Hops owned by John and Rose Stahl won first place with their Neo 1 hops.
Strasburg Farms LLC, owned by Tom Woelmer, won honorable mention with his native Mystique hops.
Congratulations to our local hop growers!
