Farmers from several counties gathered at a Farmers for Schuette rally in Ionia County on Sept. 21, 2018 on the farm of Michigan Farm Bureau (MFB) board member Jeff Sandborn, in backing AgriPac-endorsed gubernatorial candidate Bill Schuette and his running mate Lisa Posthumus Lyons. The over 100 in attendance heard from both Schuette and Posthumus Lyons express their appreciation for the support of MFB and its members.
“We’re here to tell you we’re going to continue Michigan’s comeback and move Michigan forward,” said Posthumus Lyons. “I know there’s a lot of 4H’ers and FFA members out there, and I was one as well. I know this will ring true with many of them. We will make sure everybody has a place to learn. Everybody will have a place to work, with the opportunity to earn a living for their family. This election is going to be determined by who shows up to vote, and so join me as we roll-up our sleeves across the state from the U.P. to Southeast Michigan as we get our message out that our best days are forward.”
Schuette is a past recipient of MFB’s two highest awards of recognition legislators can receive, the Silver and Golden Plow awards. His pro-business platform of expanding Agriculture Processing Renaissance Zones, along with supporting additional capital and start-up grants for ag processing facilities are two reasons AgriPac has endorsed him for governor.
“Here’s the question to all of you here at Sandborn Farms, and to everyone across Michigan who will vote in 44 days; are we going to go forward or are we going back,” said Schuette. “I can tell you members of Farm Bureau, we are going forward. Lisa and I, in our first days in office, will cut your taxes, as tax cuts mean jobs. That’s job one. Second, we’re going to lower your auto insurance rates. We pay a thousand dollars on average, if not more, than any other state for auto insurance and we’re going to fix that.”
A former congressman, state senator and Director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture, Bill Schuette received AgriPac’s endorsement because of his work to understand agriculture’s priorities and his willingness to support policy benefiting Michigan’s food and agriculture industry, that according to MFB President Carl Bednarski.
“Bill Schuette is a steadfast advocate and staunch supporter of the Michigan Right to Farm Act,” said Bednarski. “While serving in the Michigan Senate, he led the effort to amend the act, strengthening it by providing preemption to local government ordinances. And earlier this year, as Attorney General, he issued an opinion upholding the act against attempts to restrict farming activities. For those, and many other reasons, we rally here today for the next governor of Michigan.”
