Gov. Rick Snyder recently approved a new state law prohibiting local governments from imposing taxes on food manufacturing, distribution or sale.
“Michigan Farm Bureau supported the legislation because our member-developed policy specifically opposes taxing food,” said Legislative Counsel Rebecca Park. “We need to protect families, farmers and local businesses from the negative impacts food taxes would have on the state’s economy.”
Sponsored by Rep. Rob VerHeulen (R-Walker), House Bill 4999 received strong bipartisan support throughout the legislative process; passing 101-7 in the House and 30-5 in the Senate.
