Michigan Farm Bureau is supporting the legislation to address farmers’ concerns with how the site-specific review process is conducted when registering a new water withdrawal.
According to MFB’s Government Relations Manager, Matt Smego, the bill will provide some relief and clarity for both users of the state’s water withdrawal registration program and Department of Environmental Quality staff.
“When passed, the bill will improve existing processes and provide users with the means to make water approvals less expensive and time consuming,” Smego said. “Contrary to what opponents are saying, the legislation does not change farmers and other users’ obligations to not impact nearby resources, nor does it dilute DEQ’s authority over the process.”
