The agriculture industry naturally focuses on growing more products on less land. What doesn’t come as naturally is assessing relatively unconventional spaces for food production, processing or retailing. Specifically, many brick-and-mortar storefronts are ripe for reinvention as consumer preferences evolve and migrate toward online e-commerce. Those and other pressures are causing some companies to vacate their big-box stores, smaller groceries, and traditional department stores.
Are there agricultural uses for such vacant structures? If yes, are entrepreneurs interested in navigating potential infrastructure and regulatory hurdles to invest in new ways of connecting farms and farm products with consumers?
Potential uses run a wide gamut: farmers’ markets, innovative agri-tourism destinations, niche food retailing, cutting-edge fruit and vegetable production, meal-kit distribution, or retailing location. And the feasibility of such ideas is as varied as the situations and locations themselves.
