Grants of up to $500 per county Farm Bureau will be available after the first of the year to support Local History Teams’ work in celebrating the legacy of their local farm communities—including their county Farm Bureaus. Originally outlined in the program’s Tool Kit & Resource Guide, grants will be disbursed in separate winter and summer application-and-award cycles.
We expect the winter-cycle application window to happen in December, following state annual meeting, with funds disbursed in February. Summer-cycle applications will likely be accepted in April for disbursements in June.
A simple online application form is under development and will be made available well in advance of the first application window. The form will ask for information regarding your county’s Local History Team, what projects and activities it’s planning, member involvement estimates and outreach beyond the farming community.
“It’s a simple form, but it touches all the most important facets of our overall centennial celebration next year,” said Jeremy C. Nagel, MFB’s member communications specialist and manager of the Local History Team program. “In the name of encouraging as much county- and member involvement as possible, the bar for these grants isn’t set sky high—well within reach of any county with an active team and some good plans.
“We’re looking for solid History Team projects, aggressive member engagement and hopefully outreach efforts that will help emphasize to non-farming communities the durable, sustainable legacy of local agriculture.”
Over the summer the tide of of Local History Team activity has been rising statewide, with groups getting under way in Kalamazoo, Cheboygan, Monroe, Ottawa, Charlevoix, Branch, Tuscola and dozens of other counties.
Every county has a story to tell as unique as the volunteers who are stepping up to tell it. Look for updates in Farm Gate sharing some of the great ideas cropping up across both peninsulas.
