A group of Young Farmers from across the border found their way into the southwestern Lower Peninsula recently for an informative tour of several agricultural sites in Kalamazoo, St. Joseph and Van Buren counties.
Several curious young members of the Indiana Farm Bureau got a feel for the region’s diverse—and delicious—farm sector Aug. 17-18, touring sites showcasing fruit, vegetable and grain production.
Day One included stops at Mendon Seed Growers in St. Joseph County; Bell's Brewery in Kalamazoo; and Avalon Farms in Climax. That day wrapped up with a dinner at Avalon Farms as well, hosted by the Leach family and Kalamazoo County Farm Bureau, and attended by a host of Michigan’s own Young Farmers from around the area.
Day Two saw the group touring Trever Meachum's High Acres Fruit Farm near Hartford, then visiting two highlights of the South Haven area’s hallmark commodity: blueberry harvester manufacturer Haven Harvesters, and blueberry growers DeGrandchamp Farms.
