Mecosta and Montcalm County Farm Bureaus cohosted a long-awaited farm safety event last month, postponed by the pandemic since March of last year.

Members from four counties — 43 adults and 18 dependents — attended the eagerly anticipated event at Mike Rasmussen’s Hill Haven Farms near Edmore. After registering everyone enjoyed a catered meal then settled in for presentations.

Craig Anderson, safety services specialist for Michigan Farm Bureau, met with the adults to discuss grain bin safety, including how to avoid accidents and what to do if you get stuck in a bin. He also addressed tractor safety; how to prevent rollovers and road accidents; and chemical handling, cleanup and storage.

Three sessions were specifically tailored to the youth audience, sharing vital considerations regarding chemical handling, chainsaw safety and tractor/PTO awareness.

Afterwards MFB District 7 Regional Manager Bridget Moore shared her satisfaction with the event now that it was finally in the books.

“This took a lot of volunteers to help organize and plan, so it was really exciting to see such a great turnout,” she said.

Members were able to receive 2 RUP credits for participating. For more, check out this video.
