You can go to any library and look up “barns”, but now you can see the real thing on display at the SSC library in Standish.  Representatives from the Arenac County Farm Bureau were privileged to present a beautifully designed and constructed barn to Librarian Miss Brittney at the school’s recent reading assembly. The purpose of the barn is to call attention to the Ag accurate books it houses.  Students may check them out, read and learn many interesting facts on farming and other Agri businesses.   The barn was designed and constructed by Doug Hanchett of Sterling.  Another one is in production for a 2nd library placement. Mr. Hanchett enjoys building these small barns that depict different styles seen in the area.  One example that features all natural materials is on display at Sister’s Attic in Sterling.   The barn is probably one of the most iconic images of life on the farm. Some are converted into wedding and event venues others used for storage or just stand there high and proud in tribute to the past.  New barns today are actually pole barns or tool sheds, but they don’t carry the nostalgic memories we have for the old red barn back home on the farm.
