The Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MICRC) on Nov. 12 published 15 additional draft federal and state legislative district maps. The new draft maps are available for public comment through Dec. 27.
Michigan Farm Bureau (MFB) encourages members to weigh in on the maps that include an additional five U.S. Congressional map drafts, six Michigan Senate map drafts, and four Michigan House map drafts.
“Our members are in the best position to provide individualized, community-based feedback on the regions they live, work and raise families in,” said Matt Kapp, MFB government relations specialist. “That is why we will not be advocating for one map over another as a statewide organization.
“We place high value on opportunities for farmers to provide input, engage in debate and be a voice at the table, so we encourage members to share concerns and suggestions on the proposed maps through the public comment period.”
The MICRC will meet on Dec. 30 to adopt one final map for each legislative chamber.
The final plan must receive a majority vote of the commission with at least two Democratic, two Republican and two independent commissioners voting in support of the plan. If those criteria are not met, additional procedures are in place to determine the final maps.
