Summer is here! This means tons of fun in the sun, swimming all day long, camping and other adventurous trips. While summer can be a time of fun and carefree attitudes, there is still important safety precautions that should be at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Here are some recommendations from The Mayo Clinic to help have a fun and safe summer.
Sun Safety
- Use broad-spectrum sunscreen and reapply according to the directions — even on cloudy days!
- Avoid being in the sun for long periods of time during the sun’s peak hours of the day.
- Wear protective gear, like sunglasses, hats and UV protective clothing.
Skin Safety
- When going into an area there may be ticks, cover as much skin as possible. Wear shoes, long sleeves, gloves and tuck long pants into your socks.
- Stay on trails and avoid walking through long grass and vegetation.
- Familiarize yourself with how to identify poison ivy, sumac or oak and avoid at all costs.
- Use bug repellent on clothing and any exposed skin.
Vehicle Safety
- When riding a bicycle, skateboard, motorcycle, ATV or horseback riding, wear a proper fitting helmet.
- While riding ATVs, only allow the number of passengers the vehicle was intended for. Use seatbelts properly and when available.
- Never drink alcohol or use substances when using wheeled vehicles.
Lawn and Yard Safety
- Before beginning to mow, clear the area of objects such as toys, large sticks and stones.
- When mowing, wear close-toed shoes, long pants, eye and ear protection.
- Do not touch lawnmower blades even when engine is shut off.
- Store chemicals and pesticides in the original containers and read the individual product labels for proper use and disposal. Keep out of reach of children.
Water Safety
- When on or near water, always wear a proper flotation device.
- Don’t go swimming alone.
- Install pool gates and consider alarms to notify you if the gate is opened.
- Never operate boats or other watercraft while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.
General Summer Safety
- Stay hydrated, avoid alcoholic or caffeinated beverages as they cause dehydration.
- Supervise children on playground equipment, in and around pools and while biking.
- Handle fireworks with care and caution and keep them out of reach of children.
- Never grill indoors.
