Legislative updates for April 2026

Privately Owned Cervidae

House Bill 5645 and Senate Bill 809, introduced by Rep. Phil Green (R-Millington) and Sen. John Cherry (D-Flint), respectively, would transfer oversight of privately owned cervids from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Farm Bureau supports the legislation. HB 5645 has been referred to the House Agriculture Committee and SB 809 has been referred to the Senate Natural Resources and Agriculture Committee.

Skilled Trade Credit

Sponsored by Jason Woolford (R-Howell), House Bills 5648-5649 would create a pathway for students to work during their final year of high school while receiving Michigan Merit Curriculum credit. The legislation would also establish a tax credit of up to 50% of qualified expenses for employers who participate. Farm Bureau policy supports a well-rounded education and the concept of these bills. The legislation has been referred to the House Education and Workforce Committee.

Agriculture Appreciation Month

Sen. Roger Victory (R-Hudsonville) introduced Senate Resolution 101, which designated March 2026 as Agriculture Appreciation Month. Adopted March 17, the resolution recognizes Michigan’s food and agriculture industry as a cornerstone of the state economy, contributing $125.8 billion annually, supporting more than 805,000 jobs, and highlighting the state’s leadership in diverse commodities. Farm Bureau supported the resolution.

Cosponsors included Senators Aric Nesbitt, Lana Theis, Kevin Daley, Ed McBroom, John Damoose, Michael Webber, Jim Runestad, Joe Bellino Jr., Dan Lauwers, Thomas Albert, Rick Outman, Ruth Johnson, Jon Bumstead, Mark Huizenga, Jonathan Lindsey, Michele Hoitenga, and Mallory McMorrow.
