This update includes recently introduced bills and those moving through the legislative process. Michigan Farm Bureau’s positions are rooted in the organization’s member-developed policy.

State Issues

Food Service Exemptions

House Bill 5911, sponsored by Rep. Tyrone Carter (D-Detroit), would amend the state’s food law to clarify that if a rental hall does not have a kitchen or food preparation space it is not included in food service establishment licenses. Farm Bureau policy supports the legislation that awaits consideration by the House Regulatory Reform Committee.

Personal Finance Curriculum

Introduced by Rep. Kathy Schmaltz (R-Jackson), House Bill 5815 would create a requirement for students to complete a 1/2 credit in personal finance. The requirement may also be fulfilled by a career and technical education course. Farm Bureau supports the bill, as the organization’s policy supports flexibility in the Michigan Merit Curriculum and allowing students multiple learning pathways.
