Andrew Vermeesch is the new director of the Public Policy & Commodity Division at Michigan Farm Bureau.

On Friday, the Michigan Farm Bureau Family of Companies announced Vermeesch will oversee the development of legislative and regulatory initiatives shaped by member-driven policy, working closely with elected officials, industry leaders, and Farm Bureau members.

In his new role, effective Oct. 20, Vermeesch will lead the division’s strategic efforts to engage policymakers and champion the organization’s grassroots advocacy priorities at both the state and federal levels.

Vermeesch previously served as the organization’s legislative counsel for the past 11 years, handling transportation, natural resources, and energy policy issues. This includes expanding hunting opportunities and reducing crop damage in Michigan, clarifying agricultural transportation regulations, and advocating for a balanced renewable energy policy that protects private property rights and farmland.

“The talent within the applicant pool for this role was impressive and truly showcased the strong reputation of Michigan Farm Bureau as a leading organization that people want to be a part of,” said MFB Chief Operating Officer Michelle Reynaert. “Throughout the process, Andrew’s respect for our 106-year history and his deep commitment to our continued growth and service to our members were evident.”

Reynaert added: “His leadership will strengthen communication across government entities, foster collaboration within our organization, and continue MFB’s legacy as one of Michigan’s most effective and respected advocacy organizations.”

A graduate of Grand Valley State University, Vermeesch brings more than a decade of experience in government relations and agricultural policy. He previously worked in various capacities under Congresswoman Candice Miller in Washington, D.C., gaining valuable experience in federal policy and constituent relations.

“I am honored to step into this role and continue advancing the important work Michigan Farm Bureau does on behalf of our members,” Vermeesch told Michigan Farm News.

“The strength of our organization come from its grassroots, from the farmers who share their insight and leadership to shape our priorities. Every day our team works to make sure farmers’ voices are heard in Lansing and in Washington, D.C., and I’m excited to help move those efforts forward as we work together to strengthen Michigan agriculture.”
