Monroe County Farm Bureau Secures Grant for Vital Grain Rescue Safety Training
The Monroe County Farm Bureau is proud to report on the Hazards of Flowing Grain & Confined Space Entry/Rescue Training held on Saturday, July 18th. Hosted at the Ida Fire Department, this essential safety training provided first responders with the critical knowledge and practical skills required to respond effectively to grain bin entrapment emergencies.
Grain dust, shifting storage structures, and high-capacity machinery pose severe hazards to farm operators and rescue personnel alike. This proactive training aims to significantly reduce risks and equip our first responders with lifesaving rescue methodologies and equipment. The comprehensive class blended classroom instructions with hands-on simulations, highlighting safe entry procedures, structural analysis, and the deployment of state-of-the-art rescue equipment.
Equipment was also provided to two area fire departments through this grant. Ida Fire Department received a rescue coffer dam & grain auger and Ottawa Lake-Whiteford Fire Department received a grain auger to go with a rescue coffer dam they already had.
This program was made possible through a generous grant secured by the Monroe County Farm Bureau. Funding for the grant was proudly provided by the Michigan Foundation for Agriculture and ITC Holdings Corp, both of whom share a deep commitment to preserving and enhancing agricultural safety and regional infrastructure across the state of Michigan. Training was conducted by SATRA (Safety & Technical Rescue Association). Thank you to Luckey Farmers Inc for the use of 200 bushels of grain and their facility for the training.
To support the participants and instructors during this intensive training day, a complimentary lunch from Carl's Hide-A-Way was provided by local sponsors, highlighting the collaborative community spirit surrounding this initiative. Lunch sponsors included:

Organizers stress that agricultural safety is a community-wide effort. By bringing together first responders from numerous fire departments around Monroe County, this event fosters critical inter-agency collaboration that will ultimately save lives in the event of an agricultural crisis.
