Need affordable individual health insurance? Apply by Aug. 15!

Date Posted: July 29, 2021

Do you need health insurance? Or do you need help paying the monthly health insurance premiums? Because of the COVID-19 situation and a new federal law, you may be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period to join an individual health insurance plan.

The American Rescue Plan Act (ARP) of 2021 is designed in part to reduce health care costs, expand access to health insurance, and ensure nearly everyone who buys their own individual or family health insurance through the Marketplace can receive a tax credit to reduce health insurance premiums.

Important things to know about the ARP Special Enrollment Period

In general, the Special Enrollment Period does not apply to individuals covered by an employer group health plan or individuals enrolled in Medicare.

If you don’t currently have a health insurance plan, you can enroll in one from now until Aug. 15, when the ARP Special Enrollment Period ends.

If you currently have an individual health insurance plan on the Marketplace, you can update your application to get more help paying your monthly premiums (increased tax credits). Once you’ve updated your application, you can either reenroll in your current plan (with lower premiums) or switch to a different plan.

If you previously didn’t qualify for reduced premiums for a Marketplace health plan because your income was too high, check back in because you may now qualify for premium tax credits.
