The volunteer appointees play an important role assisting in research and development of onion farming and promoting consumption of the vegetable.

Kent County’s Bruce Klamer and Calhoun County’s Mark Nail are among Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s recent appointments to the Michigan Onion Committee

The Michigan Onion Committee seeks to promote the production and consumption of Michigan-grown onions and assist in the agricultural research and development of onion farming.

Appointees include:

  • Kent County Farm Bureau member Bruce Klamer, of Byron Center, has served as the president at V & W farms since 1981. Klamer has chaired the Onion Committee since 1995. He is reappointed to represent growers-at-large through August 2023.
  • Calhoun County Farm Bureau member Mark Nail, of Marshall, is the owner of Mark Nail Farms. He grows onions, corn, and soybeans and has 20 years of onion growing experience. Nail is reappointed to represent growers-at-large through August 2025.
  • Mitchell Schreur, of Hudsonville, is a farm manager at Schreur Farms and has been working at the family farm for most of his life. He’s served on the Onion Committee for three years and is reappointed to represent growers-at-large through August 2025.
  • Michael Bosch, of Hamilton, is a co-owner of Eding Brothers Celery Farm and grows 60 acres of onions. Bosch is reappointed to represent growers-at-large through August 2023.
  • James Young, of Hastings, is the eastern technical sales manager for the American Takii Seed Company. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education from Oklahoma State University and is appointed to represent shippers through August 2025.

The appointees are subject to Senate approval.
