Michigan Farm Bureau’s AgriPac is supporting incumbent candidate Sen. Mark Huizenga in his Nov. 8 general election bid for the newly redrawn 30th Senate District, including portions of northeastern Ottawa County and midsections of Kent County.

The Friend of Agriculture holds a 100% voting record with Michigan Farm Bureau since joining the Senate in 2021 via a special election. Huizenga previously served three years in the state House.

In addition to extensive local and state government experience, Huizenga has — for more than 15 years — owned a management consulting firm, providing services across the United States.

Huizenga gained familiarity with agriculture growing up on a small vegetable farm in Walker, and later working at Lakeside Farms in Hudsonville where they grew celery and onions.

Providing background to county Farm Bureau candidate evaluation committees, Huizenga shared the biggest issue facing agriculture in his district is inflation.

“Chemicals, fertilizer and items needed every day to run a farm are in short supply or have risen in price dramatically,” Huizenga wrote. “We need to look to provide relief at the pump and to help with the supply chain — I am proud to have voted in support of the potash project in Evart.

“Finding ways to help our state be self-sustaining is crucial.”

Huizenga also explained how he would support ways to spur growth in rural communities and the agricultural economy.

“We can continue to support farmland preservation programs, work with our federal officials to mitigate ‘ag dumping’ from other countries and continue to support the agriculture school at MSU.”
