Today we spotlight amazing Collegiate Farm Bureau member Michael Ceja to share how Collegiate Farm Bureau can help enhance a student’s college experience and how members grow personally though the opportunities CFB provides.

Originally from Alma, Michael recently graduated with an associate’s degree in business management from Delta College and will soon pursue his bachelor’s in political science. Michael is a proud member of Delta Collegiate Farm Bureau which has around 20 members and back home also belongs to the Gratiot County Farm Bureau.

He first became involved with Collegiate Farm Bureau in 2018 when he arrived at Delta. Through his time in FFA, he already had a good relationship with Delta Collegiate Farm Bureau Advisor Leslie Siefka, who encouraged him to continue developing himself through leadership roles in ag advocacy.

“One event and activity that has really defined my CFB experience has been the discussion meet,” said Michael, who competed at the state level during both his years at Delta, both times making it to the finals.

He won the state finals in 2019 and represented Michigan at the 2020 American Farm Bureau Collegiate Virtual Discussion Meet, making it to the Sweet 16.

Michael appreciates how his time competing in Discussion Meets helped develop his understanding of Michigan agriculture.

“I was able to learn and clearly understand the issues that face our industry every day,” he said, “including mental-health advocacy, innovation and technology, as well as how we as collegiate members can combat our labor shortages utilizing multiple demographics.

“Participating in the different levels of competition, I was able to have beneficial, impactful conversations with farmers and consumers, take what I learned to the discussion table and voice the concerns and solutions Michigan has to offer.”

Now a converted Discussion Meet booster, Ceja said he encourages other students to join Collegiate Farm Bureau.

“I would encourage any student who is passionate about agriculture, leadership or policy to get involved in Collegiate FB because it opens so many doors for learning, growth, industry, exposure and professional networking.”

We encourage County Farm Bureaus to reach out to local Collegiate Farm Bureau advisor to introduce yourself to the students and invite them to events such as Discussion Meets.
