Shiawassee dishes up 1,000+ member meals in annual pig roast

Risen from the doldrums of pandemic restrictions, Shiawassee County Farm Bureau’s annual member pig roast this year saw more than 1,000 meals served Aug. 3 to both regular and associate members from across the county.

Cooperation with the City of Corunna allowed Farm Bureau volunteers to utilize the McCurdy Park Commercial Building to shelter event workers and their packaging line from afternoon storms bringing desperately needed rain.

Not quite everyone managed to stay dry, however.

Volunteer Renae Kingsbury and MFB Regional Manager Nicole Jennings both got a good soaking checking in members as they entered the drive-through service line.

Despite generously sponsoring the event, Farm Bureau Insurance Agents Rick Kingsbury, Tom Stacey and John Wilkins also were drenched as they served meals to hundreds of hungry members.

A number of special guests pitched in and contributed to the event’s success.

MFB Chief Operating Officer Scott Piggott helped Maynard Farms and county volunteers portion out the pigs. MFB President Carl Bednarski and FBI Managing Partner Allyssa Gulvas bagged up meals.

District 5 Director Stephanie Schafer and several county volunteers boxed up meals, and Michigan Ag in the Classroom Specialist Nathan Hanselman worked alongside county volunteers serving up to-go containers.

Extra meals were distributed to local fire departments, dispatchers and jail employees. With the storms coming through and all the calls they were getting, it felt great to feed our first responders.
