Brentwood Restaurant in Caro recently hosted Tuscola County Farm Bureau’s annual legislative breakfast, which drew nearly 40 attendees — the strongest showing since launching the event four years ago.

Attendees included Dist. 25 Senator Dan Lauwers, Dist. 98 Rep. Greg Alexander, Dist. 67 Rep. Phil Green, and Sanilac County Farm Bureau member Cole Wood from Dist. 9 Congresswoman Lisa McClain’s office.

Several township officials were present, as well as members of the Tuscola County Road Commission and some folks from our NRCS office. I was there to represent Tuscola County Farm Bureau, alongside several other board members and our administrator, Donna Foley

This was by far our most successful breakfast, with many local topics discussed, including local control over wind, solar and data centers; and extensive discussion about local utilities installing fiber optic lines.

I felt the turnout and diversity of the group made for a great flow of conversation — better than any of our previous events. We discussed in detail what’s happening around Tuscola County, including projects planned for later in the year.

Representing the state Farm Bureau were MFB President Ben LaCross and his predecessor, Unionville beet-and-bean grower Carl Bednarski. MFB staffers included Public Policy Director Andrew Vermeesch, State Governmental Relations Manager Rob Anderson, National Legislative Counsel Jacob Smith, and Thumb Regional Manager Laken Polega-Smith

It was a great morning of conversation, closed out with President LaCross’ update from his recent visit to the White House.

Next year our goal is to have two such events — don’t miss them! These are great opportunities to put Tuscola County agriculture front-and-center for an audience of key local decision-makers. We’d welcome your participation!
