Wexford County Farm Bureau’s Young Farmers had the pleasure of hosting Forestry & Friends Sept. 20 at Seaton Creek Campground near Mesick. Families, students and forestry enthusiasts joined us for a fun, family-friendly day spent celebrating Michigan’s forests, learning new skills and connecting with our local community.
We were thrilled to welcome members from county Farm Bureaus across the state — Grand Traverse, Kent, Manistee, Mason, Osceola and Wayne — who brought diverse perspectives and a shared passion for forestry.
Our keynote speaker was our own forestry professional Clayton Rogers, a Wexford County Young Farmer who helps families learn about the environment around them. Rogers shared tips on safely putting a fire out — dead out — following ‘leave no trace’ principles, identifying trees and understanding the forestry industry. He even addressed some common misconceptions about forestry and helped everyone leave with practical knowledge they could use.
Attendees also enjoyed a quick river trip, pressed apple cider and gathered around a cozy bonfire. For some it was their first time exploring a National Forest or visiting a U.S. Forest Service campground.
Everyone took home new tools and resources for continued learning and exploring the woods this fall — and even a door prize or two!
Events like this demonstrate the impact we can make when we come together to celebrate our local resources and community. We’re exceptionally proud of the momentum we’re building and look forward to more!
Special thanks go out to Mason County’s Abe Shoup, who was especially helpful, staying late and returning the next morning to assist with teardown. Abe went above and beyond to ensure everyone was safe and cared for, and his dedication truly made a lasting impact.
We also appreciate the support of Wexford County Farm Bureau’s board of directors, whose encouragement and resources were essential in making this event possible.
Thank you to everyone who came out and helped make our inaugural Forestry & Friends event such a success. We can’t wait to see you all at our next adventure in the forest!
