Four MSU students honored with Michigan Farm Bureau Scholarships

Four exemplary Michigan State University (MSU) students were honored Saturday Feb. 24 at Michigan Farm Bureau’s (MFB) Young Farmers Leaders Conference in Port Huron. Matthew Johnson of Muskegon County, Kerrigan Lynch of Jackson County, Callie Loew of Kent County, and Mackenzie Strong of Gratiot County received MFB’s Marge Karker Scholarship. Each received a $1,000 award to help fund their MSU education.

MFB backs petition to repeal state’s energy siting overreach

A voter-led petition seeking to repeal a law that allowed the state to seize local control of large-scale wind and solar projects has received Michigan Farm Bureau’s support. The bills, backed by Gov. Whitmer and approved last fall, transferred decisions on zoning and siting for energy projects from the state’s 1,240 local townships to the Michigan Public Service Commission — consisting of three members appointed by the governor.

Loss of environmental oversight boards looming

The state House and Senate are moving closer to eliminating three environmental oversight boards within the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. MFB remains opposed to the effort.
